THE PROBLEM

Efficient diagnosis of primary care complaints and other medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, renal failure, and kidney stones), as well as the treatment of some injuries, requires timely, specific information from laboratory tests.

In some places, such as small towns, remote rural areas, refugee camps, or during relief operations, conventional diagnostic laboratories are not available, and health care personnel are forced to work without modern laboratory support.

Lack of convenient laboratory facilities increases health care costs through delayed or even incorrect diagnoses. In the worst cases, this results in needless individual patient suffering and can even lead to serious public health problems.

THE SOLUTION
The Portable Field Medical Laboratory brings modern medical diagnostic technology to where it is needed.

These systems are the first to combine true portability with an extensive variety of basic laboratory tests. Diagnostic testing can be done on-site, even at the patient's bedside.

The Portable Field Medical Laboratory system makes possible dramatic improvements in patient care and early detection of chronic and infectious diseases.

Many diseases, injuries, and conditions which require immediate treatment in order to prevent serious complications, or even death, can receive prompt attention with the vital information gained through this diagnostic technology.

With the Portable Field Medica/Laboratory, it is not necessary to build costly laboratory facilities to serve the health care needs of the rural people. Also, the user is able to make or readily obtain most reagents required. Thus, the system promotes economy.

PURE GENIUS

Pure Genius is not enough to describe the contents of the Field Laboratory Kit. Consider these features:

The Portable Laboratory Field Kit is not limited to remote rural locations, it provides state of the art assessments for any natural medicine clinic. These methods and modalities have been carefully researched, evaluated and tested on thousands of patients over the last ten years. The tests are not esoteric, bordering on divination, they are straight forward methods used by doctors for over one hundred years. Consider these dynamics (where the diagnosis is also the treatment):

This portable field laboratory and our training programs will surely transform your practice into a more productive occupation while saving your patients from the misery we seek to remedy.

There are three main applications for Portable Medical Lab systems and other portable medical laboratory diagnostic equipment:

• Public health activities

• Emergency and disaster situations

• Veterinary medicine

Public Health Activities

Most experts agree that better diagnostic information is essential to improve health and health care in developing countries. Reliable diagnostic information is a prerequisite for the planning and evaluation of disease control programs. Without good medical diagnosis, there is no rational basis for treatment. The diagnosis of many chronic as well as tropical diseases depends on laboratory technology. The most important problems that many countries face today in this field are gross inadequacies of essential laboratory services at intermediate and peripheral levels.

The Portable Medical Lab was designed for use in developing countries. This compact, portable system is useful for many, medial diagnostic laboratory tests: hematology, urinalysis, blood and urine chemistry, bacteriology, mycology, and parasitology. It is the only medical laboratory system that combines true portability (small suitcase sized units) that can be hand-carried or backpacked) with professional quality diagnostic test and results. Using this system, medical diagnostic tests can be done in rural areas, in clinics, or at the patient's bedside.

Portable Medical Lab systems can help improve health care in developing countries in four ways; namely to:

1) Improve and hasten disease diagnoses, especially in rural areas, to enable early, appropriate medical treatment and initiation of effective disease control measures.

2) Take the laboratory to the patient, thus avoiding costs of transporting patients and the numerous problems inherent in sending medical specimens to a central laboratory and obtaining the test results.

3) Minimize costs by using micromethods that need only small amounts of stains and reagents.

4) Control test costs, since reagents and stains can be manufactured or obtained locally.

Availability of diagnostic laboratory services is particularly important in rural areas of developing countries, where most people live. Even in suburbs, people are often far from medical centers. Portable medical laboratory systems have been used in Nevis and Ecuador now for many years with a high level of doctor satisfaction. Units are soon to be installed in the Venezuela, the Philippines and Nepal.

Diagnoses made by doctors and other medical attendants in rural clinics or villages are improved by on-site, timely medical laboratory tests. Also, more precise diagnoses make a positive contribution to medical reports sent to central health authorities. These reports provide scientific support for planning and for improving disease prevention and control. By taking the Portable Medical Lab along with the medical team, the most important diagnostic laboratory tests are done in the clinic or at the bedside during the initial patient visit, thereby improving medical care.

The Portable Medical Lab can support measures for epidemic control in the field . If an epidemic can be diagnosed on-site and early, there is a much better chance for successful control. Appropriate control measures, therapy or immunizations, can be started immediately once the cause is known. Sending clinical specimens to a central laboratory is often inefficient. Samples deteriorate, and communication of test results is subject to delay or loss. Lost time can result in spread of an epidemic and more expensive control measures. A system can be organized using health centers, midwives, and village health workers to alert authorities to disease outbreaks. The Portable Medical Lab can provide important diagnostic support.

Emergency Preparedness & Disaster Situations

Laboratory tests are often needed in emergency and disaster situations. Disaster situations create the possibility of sudden and unexpected infectious disease epidemics. Such situations include earthquake, flood, tidal wave, drought, war, and population displacement. These situations all have the potential to precipitate epidemics.

The significant advantages of a Portable Medical Lab in emergencies and disasters are:

(1) Ease of transport - It can be taken into the most difficult terrain and resist severe climates.

(2) Immediate availability - A Portable Medical Lab can he carried by the first relief teams on the scene. Sufficient diagnostic tests can be done with it to assess disease prevalence and the potential for an epidemic.

Thus, Portable Medical Labs can help to prevent or ameliorate the consequences of infectious diseases in a disaster. Laboratory results provided early on will greatly assist planning for relief efforts.

Veterinary Medicine

Veterinarians working in the field, particularly those engaged in large animal and food animal practices, find that on-site laboratory tests can be very useful. Not only can infectious diseases be diagnosed, but laboratory results can help detect other health problems. -Portable Medical Labs can be customized for the diverse kinds of veterinary practices.

Laboratory tests can be a profit center for the veterinarian. Also, the professionalism demonstrated to clients by performing diagnostic laboatory tests on-thespot in the field can be very impressive, enhancing reputation.
